10 Top Games of E3 2012
We find out the best ten games on offer at E3 2012. Here they are, in no particular order:
1.Watch Dogs
Ubisoft’s new cyber action shooter mixes a GTA-style open-world environment with a sci-fi twist. Hack into CCTV cameras, mobile phones, take control of traffic lights and lift bridges in order to complete your missions. Mindblowing graphics and Ubi’s unwillingness to announced platforms leads us to believe Watch Dogs might be our first glimpse at next-gen gaming.
2.ZombiU
Mario and Pikmin might be heading to the Wii U but our most wanted game for Ninty’s new console is ZombiU – a survival horror set in London featuring undead coppers and Queen’s Guards. Use the GamePad as a radar, a scope for your crossbow, to manage your inventory and scan environments for ammo.
3.Dishonored
Bioshock meets late-nineties PC classic Thief in this first-person shooter set in a steampunk-inspired city gripped by plague and a corrupt leader. You play a supernatural assassin with a slew of special powers including teleportation, possession (of humans and animals) and command of a ‘devouring swarm’ of rats.
4.The Last of Us
At first glance it might look like Naughty Dog has got lazy and simply rehashed Unchartered with a little girl as your companion rather than an old man but The Last Of Us has a real sense of impending doom. Reminiscent of The Road or The Walking Dead this post-apocalyptic shooter makes Nathan Drake look like a wimp.
5.Tomb Raider
Lara Croft’s latest makeover is more than just cosmetic. Square Enix’s reboot of the franchise includes an RPG-esque survival skills system to help her avoid a grisly fate on an island full of wild animals and even wilder humans.
6.Beyond: Two Souls
The follow-up to Heavy Rain is a similarly cinematic affair with Ellen Page as Jodie Holmes – a young girl troubled by a supernatural presence. Beyond follows her over the course of 15 years and features some of the best motion capture we’ve seen since LA Noire.
7.Halo 4
Proof that Halo 3 was a comma rather than a full stop in the Halo story, Master Chief returns for more intergalactic fisticuffs. Aside from some new enemies and multiplayer modes it’s more of the same – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
8.South Park: The Stick of Truth
South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker took to the E3 stage to introduce The Stick of Truth – a proper old skool RPG that’s entirely written and voiced by the pair. You play the new kid trying to make friends. Expect turn-based combat and plenty of toilet humour.
9.Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition
One of the first existing games to get the Wii U treatment (alongside Assassin’s Creed 3), Armored Edition lets you use the GamePad to guide your remote-controlled batarang, hack into computer terminals and quickly access gadgets and info.
10.Lego City Undercover
LA Noire meets everybody’s favourite coloured bricks as you play Chase McCain – a small cop in a big town. Use the Wii U GamePad as a sat-nav, communicator and to scan areas for suspects before serving up your own brand of blocky justice.
