With the football seasons of most of the world reaching that infamous squeaky bum time, today’s App of the Day on Pocket-lint is designed to keep you in touch with the comings and goings in all the best leagues that the beautiful game has to offer. So, whether your club is battling relegation, in the fight for a top spot or you’d just like to keep abreast of what’s going on, then this freebie iPhone app is a no-brainer that even the likes of Jason McAteer could manage.

ESPNsoccernet

The ESPNsoccernet iPhone app is a neatly packaged version of the huge US sports service’s football website and its front face is really the news side of things. You can pick and choose which leagues you’d like to follow as well as any international teams and even specific tournaments. Sadly, it’s all very much European based – aside the Australian A-League and the US’s MLS – but what’s there is pretty comprehensive. Just a shame not to have any action from South America really, particularly with the likes of Neymar and Damiao very much on the Premier League radar.

Once you’ve got your interests sorted, you can go to each competition’s latest news section, videos, take a look at the league table, stats, fixtures, results, match analysis and just about anything else you can think of. You can even set up push alerts to your device for your club or league or cup contests specifically.

The only other slight disappointments with ESPNsoccernet for iPhone that stop it being a real net-buster is that there are no videos of the actual action itself and that there’s currently no iPad-specific version either. ESPN would argue that there’s already the ESPN Goals app and that iPad is probably soon to come, but a little unification of the services would be nice.

All the same, the app is free and well worth a look in, but you do pay the price in the form of an endless stream of William Hill betting banners.
