Samsung 15-Inch Ultrabook Up for Pre-Orders

Samsung’s new ultraslim laptops—Samsung declines to call them ultrabooks—are now available for pre-order, and are expected to ship within the month. This for pre-order with at least one online US retailer, although specific availability was not mentioned. Only noted as ‘Coming Soon,’ the 15-inch model will also be joined by a 13-inch model expected to become available through Best Buy and CompUSA in the next few weeks. A 15-inch iteration hit the Korean market yesterday and is shipping with a Core i7-23637M ULV processor and a 256GB solid-state drive.

The 15-inch model centers on a high resolution 1600×900 display packed into a 14-inch chassis, weighs just 2.5 pounds and is half an inch thick. Samsung claims to have spent 33,000 in the research, design and development of the notebook. It is said to be 37 percent thinner and 0.4 pounds lighter than its predecessor with Samsung’s engineers customizing components so that they could be accommodated in the smallest possible footprint.

An entry-level model is expected to ship with a Core i5 processor and a 128GB SSD, helping it to achieve a cold boot in 9.8 seconds and wake from sleep in 1.4 seconds. At CES, Samsung originally expected that it would begin shipping in the US on February 27 for around $1500, with the 13-inch starting at $1400
