Apparently, this year more devices with powerful chipsets will be introduced to the market, as leaked specifications from major electronics manufacturers revealed. At least, HTC is rumored to release in 2012 two models powered by quad core processors. In this context, Apple is not expected to let its praised iDevices be overtaken by competitors and so far only unconfirmed hearsay hinted to more powerful processors to be integrated in the future generation iPhones or iPads, dubbed as A6.

However, with the codes for iOS 5.1 beta operating system also came the expected confirmation. The developers who were asked to access the beta update of the latest iOS and to test it before the public release, discovered significant clues on this matter.

Mark Gurman, from 9to5Mac, reported recently, that in iOS 5.1 codes three kind of processors are identifiable. As developers know, Apple core references begins with “core 0”, which signifies a single core processor. “Core 1” means dual core chipsets, as the ones featured in the latest iPhone and iPad 2. Since Apple doesn’t have devices powered by triple core processors, “core 2” reference does not exist. And, now the good news is that a “core 3” reference was found under iOS 5.1. beta codes.

This updated iOS version is supposedly being tested for the future generation iPad, expected to hit the market in just a couple of months. In addition, rumors say that Apple is also testing iPhone 5 and prototypes of the new iPhone are already running on this updated iOS version.
